Hurricane season in South Florida isn’t a matter of if, but when. Whether you live in a beachfront condo or a suburban single-family home in Delray Beach or Boca Raton, preparation is critical—not just for your safety, but for minimizing damage and protecting your investment.

Here’s your local-focused guide to getting hurricane-ready, with steps for both condo dwellers and homeowners.

1. Review Your Insurance Policies

Before the storms start forming:

  • Check your coverage: Ensure your homeowners or condo insurance includes windstorm and flood insurance. Standard policies may not.

  • Update your inventory: Document your belongings with photos or videos and store them digitally.

  • Condo owners: Verify what your HOA’s master policy covers—and what it doesn’t. You'll need individual coverage for the interior of your unit and personal property.

2. Secure Your Windows and Doors

Hurricane-force winds can shatter unprotected openings, leading to major internal damage.

  • Single-Family Homes: If you haven’t already, install impact-resistant windows or hurricane shutters. Reinforce garage doors.

  • Condos: Many newer buildings already have hurricane glass, but if yours doesn’t, use approved shutters or protective panels.

3. Prepare Your Property

Minimize hazards from wind and flying debris:

  • Yard Maintenance: Trim trees and remove weak branches. Secure patio furniture, grills, and outdoor decor.

  • Drainage: Clean gutters and downspouts to avoid water buildup.

  • Condo Owners: Move balcony furniture indoors at the first sign of a storm.

4. Assemble a Hurricane Kit

Whether you’re staying put or planning to evacuate, you’ll need essential supplies:

  • Non-perishable food and water (at least 3 days' worth)

  • Flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio

  • Medications, cash, phone chargers, and important documents

  • For condos: Plan for power outages in high-rises, which may affect water pressure and elevator use.

5. Know Your Evacuation Zone

Delray Beach and Boca Raton both have areas subject to evacuation orders. Visit FloridaDisaster.org or check with your local emergency management office to:

  • Find your evacuation zone

  • Map out routes

  • Know where the nearest shelters are—especially those that allow pets

6. Communicate With Your Building or HOA

  • Condo Residents: Attend any pre-season meetings and understand your building’s hurricane plan.

  • Homeowners: If you’re part of an HOA, find out what responsibilities fall on the association vs. individual owners.

7. Back Up Important Information

Digitally back up:

  • Insurance policies

  • Home documents (title, mortgage info)

  • Emergency contacts

  • Photos of your home’s interior/exterior for post-storm claims

Delray Beach and Boca Raton are no strangers to hurricanes—but with thoughtful preparation, you can protect your property, reduce risks, and ride out the season with greater peace of mind.

Whether you’re in a high-rise condo on A1A or a single-family home inland, now is the time to prepare—not when the storm is already heading your way.
